As usual, Kellara's face was impenetrable as she listened to the report of the scouts who had returned from the mouth of Vinyasa. The old tales had chosen the best time to come to life, she thought. Unspeakable horrors destroying entire villages, nightmares coming to life, fighters, and sorcerers from a mysterious order... It was as if Esgraoth himself was wreaking vengeance and punishing the emperor's subjects for his secret transgressions. All this after two garrisons of the elite Northern Cavalry and a small mobile group from the Legion of Flame were advancing towards the capital under her invisible protection, and six Assassins were already hiding in the palace near the emperor's chambers. Chaos didn't scare her; it was her element and provided countless opportunities. Amidst chaos, she was brilliantly unleashing her potential and her cool head was helping her on the thorny path to triumph.

She spent the late afternoon on the porch of the palace of the Most Holy Cadmium, the mighty hand who steered the Citadel. The petite woman in the ungainly shapeless robes and the ascetic old man with the eyes, sunken by the sleepless nights and countless vigils, had much in common. After they had finished the Sunset Prayer and sent the sun away with palms folded before their foreheads, they both relaxed in the comfortable armchairs on the veranda, which commanded a spectacular view of the Capital's maze of rooftops. The Citadel, dazzling white in its sacred purity, watched over the many-thousand strong city from the height of the Holy Hill. During her many visits, Kellara had grown close to the Patriarch. The old man valued her erudition, her sharp mind, and her alert interest in the affairs of the Radiant One. She was always ready to offer advice on the eradication of some new heresy, the discreet silencing of some overconfident scholar, or the organisation of pious works such as free dining halls for the arriving pilgrims and schools for the children of the poorest. Kellara had always warned the paranoid cleric of the dangers threatening his post and authority, and in time she had gained his trust and managed to convince him that the emperor was preparing a replacement for him. Today, she decided to step up the pressure and told him about Asverg's nightly entertainments in the secret pleasure room, adding as she leaned confidentially towards the old man's ear, that the ruler's preferred visitors were children. The pious old man's eyes widened with indignation, and Kellara adroitly moved on to the other event she had decided to
