CHAPTER 14

The door came open to a frowning Jules, arms crossed over her chest and eyes on her employer.

“Jules,” Gideon said. “Good morning.”

Her gaze moved purposely to Etta. “Is it? I wouldn’t know because I’ve spent the last hour looking for…” Her words trailed off as she took in the state of Etta’s hair and her fur-spotted dress. “I just had this washed.”

Etta winced. “I’ll clean the mess myself. It’s not your burden.”

Jules uncrossed her arms then reached past Gideon to drag Etta through. “It’s not the burden I’m concerned about. It’s the reputation of this office.” She threw a glare over her shoulder at Gideon. “And what might happen to poor Clara if anyone realizes there’s a dog terrorizing the entire wing?”

At the sound of Jules’s condemnation, a muffled whine came from behind the other door. But Etta was led to a small storage room, where she could brush fur from the front of her gown with a tool Jules apparently kept at the ready. Tucked neatly between the shelves on a small, padded seat, Jules’s petite from was curled so that her head rested against her knees, her back and boots holding her upright as she appeared to sleep. Etta stared for a moment, unsure, but a deep, easy breath lifted the woman’s shoulders, so Etta eased out of the room.

Closing the door carefully behind her, Etta glanced about the main chamber. She’d been left alone, finally, for whatever brief span of time it might be. She did not waste it. Scouring the crates and cabinets, Etta searched for any sign at all of the investigations into the prospects for king. Not a single document was present in any of the places she might have expected, and when Jules—appearing as if she’d not just been taking a midmorning nap—returned from the storeroom to check her progress, Etta—appearing as if she’d not just ransacked the room—inquired about the filing system in any way she could.

The day passed with no progress in the matter, though, and Etta was beginning to suspect that the reports were locked somewhere she would not have access to. She was itching for progress in any matter, especially given how difficult it would be to return to her father’s office since he’d caught her—or rather, Margaretta—behind his walls. When night fell, the
