Man In Black

Ihear drums banging loudly from a distance. I wake up in a cave this time; cold, sore, and confused. I must have accidentally dozed off after Bridget left me. She didn’t even remember the incident at school and for that I was grateful. Not everyday you feel like you need to tell your best friend you met an angel and there are demons chasing you down at school. I told her she got hit hard in the head at soccer practice, so I took her here to rest it off. It seemed to have placated any other questions.

But I had not had a dream for a while. Lucas said I’m doing this portal hopping myself? Why would I? What about this realm keeps calling me back? I look around me and don’t see much that would show me a way out, but I do see a dying fire by my feet. I obviously made this before I “fell asleep” and was awake in time to rekindle it. I can hear the roaring sound of water nearby but nothing to help me keep the fire going.

“Kaleena . . .” A voice filled with hatred and disgust hisses my name.

Forget the fire, I need to get out of here from the sounds of it. The voice grows louder, bouncing off the cavernous walls as it echoes.

A strong gust of wind blows out the remainder of my fire and leaves me in the dark. I walk backwards slowly to find the wall and cling to the cool, damp rock. I just wish I had more control over these dreams. It’s such an empty feeling being here alone. Where is Lucas when I actually need him?

“You can’t escape from me,” the voice hisses again. Closer.

My chest constricts as I inch my way into a direction; any direction at this point feels better than standing still. The air is thicker here compared to the woods and I hear a distinct sound closing in. I’m hoping to find a more wide-open space here because I hate feeling confined. Feeling my way against the cavernous wall, my hands begin to bleed as the jagged edges dig into me. My hand slips on something wet and I lose my step and fall into a darker pit filled with snakes.

Panic seizes me as I jerk back, kicking and screaming at the snakes I landed on. The hissing intensifies with my sudden motions as I desperately scamper back up on the platform I fell from. I now understand what that sound was earlier.

The coldness of the damp air combined with the slippery reptilian skin that slithered over my bare arms and legs is exactly what nightmares are made of. Phantom slithering sensations at my feet leave me on edge. I keep swatting my legs with fear of a snake being stuck. One thing I detest are snakes. To fall into a whole pit of them in the dark is truly terrifying.

It is still so dark, and I can’t think any more due to my heart beating so loudly in my ears.
