Chapter 15

""It's completed,"" Veronica announced, revealing an elegant brass dart gun from her inventory and placing it on the table. ""This is the 'revolver' Alice described, with a reliable ratcheting mechanism. It's made of brass because most of my iron is allocated to other projects. So, don't attempt to modify it to shoot gunpowder and bullets instead of alchemist's darts."

"I'll be fine," I assured, delicately handling the new revolver, and deftly ejecting the cylinder with a slight spin. "Impressive. Will it accommodate the darts you've provided?"

Veronica nodded. "Indeed, it will."

"Excellent." I reinserted the cylinder and placed it on the table.

Veronica offered, "Consider it a gift."

"Your generosity is appreciated," I responded, nodding in gratitude.

Akane chimed in, raising her hand high, "I've created something for both of you as well." She dramatically swept her hand across the table, summoning three crow-shaped pseudofamiliars from her inventory.

"Pseudofamiliars?" I inquired.

Akane explained, "They're also known as homunculi, depending on who you ask. These are small automatons designed to fly to specific destinations and provide you with their point of view."

Veronica acknowledged, "A practical enchantment, especially for delving, although a rat is often more versatile."

Akane countered, "But what if there's a lot of verticality, like in mazes? Then a crow becomes quite useful."

"Hmm," I mused, feeling my own creation lose some of its uniqueness.

Veronica inquired, "What have you crafted?"

"I've created a class of mineral-based rubber," I replied, producing a pair of sturdy boots from my inventory. "Different formulations offer varying degrees of hardness, and this is the toughest one I've got. After a week of testing, I can confidently say these will outlast leather soles and provide better grip on the cobbled streets around here."

"Wow," Akane muttered in amazement.

Veronica negotiated, "I'll accept two pairs as fair compensation for the revolver."

"I'll need to know your shoe size, but that won't be an issue," I confirmed.

I had been pleasantly surprised to discover that I could indeed create silicone in this system. In my world, silicone was an advanced synthetic chemical, but here, the rules of chemistry were evidently different. "This material is surprisingly easy to work with once you have the final two precursors," I added. "Mix them, pour them into a well-lubricated mold, and wait a few hours. I could teach you both in a day, or maybe even the time it takes to mix a batch."

Veronica pondered, "I wonder about other potential applications for this material. Improved footwear is nice, but I'm more of a weaponsmith than a cobbler."

I suggested, "Ergonomic grips for your weapons, perhaps? One advantage is that it's chemically inert, so it can be used to create reusable cooking utensils."

Akane playfully suggested, "Or even..." She hinted at an idea, which I quickly discouraged.

"Don't," I said wearily.

Akane inquired, "Don't make them, or don't talk about them?"

"Don't talk about them," I clarified. "Feel free to create whatever you like. I'm not here to judge."

Veronica added with a blush, "I must insist we avoid discussing such topics."

I smiled at her and said, "I love you," which made her roll her eyes and blush even more.
