We still need to nourish and maintain our body and soul. Our human bodies keep us subject to the laws of thermodynamics and gravity, for example. We need food, rest, exercise, work, relationships, and recreation. To take care of ourselves is tantamount to caring for “the temple of the living God.”38 Such a comment should inspire us to do a good job. Personal neglect does not please Him. Meanwhile, God provides the nourishment that sustains our spirit. We have constant access to it, and it is just as important to our spiritual health as breathing oxygen or drinking water is to our physical sustenance. Elihu reminds us in the book of Job, “If it were his intention and he withdrew his Spirit and breath, all mankind would perish together and man would return to the dust.”39
