Chapter Twenty

The kids didn't wake up when Zane carried them around the bed of the truck and flopped them into their seats. Or when she tangled their seatbelts around them. Or when Zane took her hand again in the truck.

The sound of her heart flapping about irregularly in her chest certainly should've woken them. And not one tiny part of her regretted that the magic Zane's touch wove around them remained unbroken. They could still share glances and no one asked questions. His thumb rubbing the side of her hand sent chills through her. Or were they heat waves? She couldn't be sure.

Disappointment settled the delightful feelings in her stomach when Zane turned into Lilly's driveway, then opened his door. It would have been nice to sit there for a moment and talk, just the two of them.

But she opened her door and climbed down. Pulling the lever to swing her seat forward, Carly reached in for Anna, who was closest.

Zane's hand at her back sent a jolt zinging through her. "I'll carry Anna in then come back for Brie. You just stay here with Daniel."

Of course, Daniel would be frightened if he woke up alone in the dark truck, so she handed a limp Anna to Zane. He cradled Anna in his arm and strode toward the house. He reappeared a minute later. "I took off her shoes and covered her up."

He'd think of it. She handed over Brie. "Thank you."

As he stepped back out of the house with his hands empty, he stopped at the door. Even through darkness broken only by the truck's head lights, she could see Zane's stare. A dancing, twirling ball of energy expanded in her stomach. She smiled back.

His walk was slow and his eyes never left hers. He took her hand and walked her to the porch, up the steps, to the doorway. The air was cool on her hand when he released it, her arm dangled at her side. She was frozen, waiting. His rough hands came up and framed her face.

That dancing light radiated all the way to her toes. His mouth came down to meet hers. It stayed too briefly and flitted to her cheek, her eye, her forehead. Just when her insides began to settle and warm, his lips came back to hers. This time it wasn't a touch, it was a caress. His hands moved, one settling on the back of her neck, turning her head just an inch. The other slipped down her spine and spanned the small of her waist.

She closed her eyes and sank into him, the warmth of his mouth, his hands, his body pressed against hers. Every part of her melted away until there was nothing more than the feeling of him touching her.

His mouth pulled back, and she swallowed a whimper. His eyes were dark, blue and searching. Her hands must've climbed up to his shoulders during the kiss, because now they were right where she needed them to pull his head back to hers.
