Chapter 18

Watching Alice flash her ID card at the entrance reminded Joseph of how they had not asked for his. How could he let her participate in this? This girl, so ready to wield a gun, was just a kid.

“Are you hungry, Joseph?” Alice asked as she walked up.

“I was just about to order up some chicken wings.”

Alice laughed. “You know, I’ve never went into a burger joint and ordered my food in courses like that. First, I went up and ordered a salad. I ate that as slowly as humanly possible. Then I got a quarter-pounder. Then, after I finished that, I had an ice cream cone.”

“Well, you must have gotten satisfied.”

She slid into the booth next to him. They kissed, then stared into each other’s eyes. Joseph held his gaze. He remembered he’d not found her attractive when they’d first met. That seemed so long ago. Joseph kissed her again, softly, on the lips. Was it possible? Or was he just so caught in the moment that reality had fallen away? Could this be real? He just wanted to be with her.

“Excuse me,” someone said.

Alice turned to the waitress.

“Can I get you something, ma’am?”

“Yeah, I’ll have a Coke. And put his on my tab.”

“Got ya." The waitress walked back to the pool tables, oblivious to what she had just taken away.

“You should get over there,” Alice said.

“Yeah,” Joseph agreed.

Alice moved, and Joseph got out. He kissed her again, and they touched hands as long as they could as he walked out.

Donald burned with anticipation as he crossed the street, now one block away from his former place of employment, Burger Shop. He had dropped Jerry’s truck off at a grocery store down the road and walked the rest of the way. Using the cover of night and the alleyways of buildings, it had not been difficult for him to hide. Not able to resist, he ran the last block of the last alley. Directly in front of him was the back of Burger Shop. He could see that the side, usually the last place people parked, was packed with cars, which meant the entire lot would be full, a bittersweet blessing. Many cars meant many places to duck as he made his way to his hiding place, the employee lot, clear on the other side. Many cars also meant many people, which increased the odds of being spotted.

Of course, being identified wouldn’t be the end of the world, at least not his world. It would probably just mean another shootout, a fight he would win. Still, he didn’t need a scene that might distract him from the true prize, Mike. If Mike still managed this particular store, he would be here. Donald was sure of that. The boss had always liked the evenings, when most of the high-school-aged kids worked.

As he walked into the lot, Donald focused his attention on the store. He heard that voice, that arrogant, feminine voice. Donald laughed. “Like clockwork,” he said out loud. Ducking between vehicles, Donald crossed in front of the restaurant and to the employee lot.
