Chapter 13

I was getting ready to follow the deputy out the door when my friend Luke walked in with his twin nieces, Sabrina and Beatrice. It had been a minute since I'd caught up with the candy maker, so the two of us stood and chatted in the entryway while his nieces took off for the teen section.

"How have you been? Business good?" I asked. Not so long ago, all of Silverlake's businesses were suffering, but luckily tourism had steadily turned around. It was something that I, along with the other business owners and the town council, was constantly trying to improve.

"It's been steady but not amazing."

"Yeah, I can agree with that." I was fortunate that I didn't have to compete with much business in town besides the bed-and-breakfast and the campground. But even I wasn't sold out most nights. I was hoping things would pick up more rolling into summer here.

"I wanted to talk to you and see what you thought about promoting a Good Old Days of Summer week, or something like that? I know we have the town bicentennial coming up, but that's not until fall. Do you think it's too late to pull something together for summer?"

I hated the thought of adding something else to my plate at the moment, but Luke had a point. We could be doing more to promote our town. I had hoped Mayor Parrish would step up and take over advertising, but she seemed content leaving it to us. I will say this was a better alternative to how she used to be actively protesting our efforts.

"Let me think on it a bit. Maybe not a full week of events, but we could probably do something over a weekend." I pictured a raft-building contest complete with a race across the lake. Maybe a volleyball tournament or a sandcastle building contest, too. The shops in Village Square could host sidewalk sales, and we could ask the town council to spring for complimentary popsicles or lemonade. The ideas began to swirl in my head. I reached for my purse to pull out my cell phone and jot down notes.

"Sabrina, noooooooo!" Beatrice wailed. Luke's head popped up. An alarmed expression crossed his face. Who knew what trouble those two were into? Laughter, the library could deal with. Mischief was something entirely different.

"I better go," Luke said as he stepped in their direction.

"It was nice seeing you!" I continued to rummage in my purse, which was more like a tote bag today. I thought it was smart with everything I wanted to take to the bridal shower to have a larger purse. My plan paid off as I pushed the two hardcover books to the side and dug to the bottom for my cell phone. I pulled my wand out and went to tuck it under my arm to get it out of my way when Mrs. White's voice startled me from behind.

"Wonderful! You're still here!" I jumped and gave a little squeak. Unfortunately, with my fingertips on my wand, the energy transferred into a spell.
