CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

After dropping off his spare key for the SOCO with the desk sergeant, Matt went to the murder room. He was met by a slightly flustered Jason. ‘I was just going to ring you, sir.’ He ran his hand through his hair. ‘Another development while you were out. We’ve found a bundle of clothes that could belong to Gabriel.’

Matt glanced around the room, still anxious to talk to Liz, and mildly concerned that her desk was empty.

‘Where did they turn up?’

‘A farmer found them. Out over Holland Fen way, they’d been pushed in between a pile of old pallets that were ready to be burnt.’

‘Why the hell did he ring us about some old clothes? People dump everything from sofas and washing machines to bags of dirty nappies, rather than go to the bloody tip.’

‘They were carefully folded and wrapped in brown paper, boss, not screwed up in an old black bin bag. And when he opened it, he saw a complete set of kid’s stuff, from shoes to underwear. He’d heard about the missing boy and put two and two together.’

‘Smart man.’ Matt’s eyes still searched the outer office for signs of Liz. ‘Have they been brought in?’

‘Straight to the lab for examination, sir.’

‘Good. Eh, where’s Liz?’

‘She was here a few minutes back.’ Jason looked around. ‘Gemma, where’s Sergeant Haynes?’

Gemma put her phone down and quickly ticked a name on a long sheet of paper before saying, ‘Got a call from her husband, sir. She’s just popped downstairs to see him for a moment. Do you need her?’

‘Yes. I don’t want to drag her away from Gary, but it’s important. Could you find her and tell her to come to my office as soon as she’s finished with her husband?’

Gemma stood up and groaned. ‘No problem, sir. I could do with stretching my legs, I’ve been on that phone for hours.’

Jason moved a step closer and whispered, ‘The super said you’ve had more problems at home.’

‘The bastard’s bloody well bugged the farmhouse.’

‘Shit!’ He puffed out his cheeks. ‘But that may explain how he knows so much about you.’

‘It’s sure helped him. I just want to know how long I’ve had a silent fucking house guest for. He could have been waltzing in and out when the fancy took him, for bloody months.’

‘How the hell did he get hold of your key?’ Jason looked at him hard. ‘That is how he’s got in, isn’t it? A spare key?’

‘Can’t think of any other way,’ said Matt. ‘I haven’t tackled her on it yet, but I’m guessing that Mrs Cable may have had a visit from our lovely, and oh so convincing, Detective Edward Dennis sometime in the recent past.’

Jason raised his eyes to the ceiling. ‘Of course. His specialty is duping old ladies, isn’t it? Which reminds me . . .’ He went to his desk and picked up a large folder. ‘I’ve got the enlargements from the CCTV at your mother’s nursing home. I thought you’d want to see them first.
