Chapter 8
"That antique brooch would be perfect to wear with your costume!" Amy exclaimed, admiring the large piece of jewelry Lila was examining at North's Jewelry Store in the mall. "Is that a real ruby?"
"Of course it's a real ruby," Lila said in an annoyed tone, as if there could be any doubt. She tilted the brooch to inspect the tiny, crimson stone.
"I'll bet it costs a fortune," Amy said with a loud sigh. "I'm so broke right now, I can't even afford fake jewelry."
"But what about your Cleopatra costume?" Lila asked. "You're going to need jewelry for that."
"I, uh, sort of changed my mind about being Cleopatra," Amy admitted.
"Changed your mind?" Lila asked. "Why? What are you going as instead?"
Amy shook her head. "Believe me, you don't want to know. But I won't be needing any jewelry."
"I don't know what the big secret is. You know about my costume."
Lila handed the brooch back to the store clerk, along with her father's credit card. Then she turned to Amy again.
"Well, I know how to get it out of you," she said. "How about two scoops of million-dollar mocha at Casey's Ice Cream Parlor? I think we deserve it after all this shopping. Come on, it's my treat."
Josh sat in a corner booth at the mall's ice cream parlor, reading a copy of the Sweet Valley News. Nothing in it gave him any clues to Margo's whereabouts. But Georgie's killer was here somewhere; Josh could sense her presence, looming like a storm cloud over this sunny, idyllic town. He was as sure of it as he'd ever been of anything in his life.
Waiting was the worst.
The detective who might be able to tell Josh more about the hit-and-run was out of town until the next week. Until then, Josh's own investigation of the accident was at a standstill.
Josh had spent some time in the library, looking through newspaper accounts of the incident. The victim, the mother of an infant boy, had worked for a prominent local catering firm. The woman had been killed a block from her home. The baby was found in the backseat of the family car, which was still parked in the driveway.
It didn't sound to him like a random accident. Could Margo have been behind the wheel of the car that struck the catering employee? Accidents seemed to happen frequently when Margo was around.
Josh had considered going to the police with his suspicions, but he had no proof—only a gut instinct, fueled by grief, vengeance, and determination. The police here would be no more likely to take him seriously than the officers in Ohio had been about Georgie's case.
He took a long drink of scalding, black coffee, and vowed again that he would find Margo, no matter what. He would get the proof he needed to get the authorities' attention. Or he would take matters into his own hands. Either way, Margo would pay for what she had done.
Suddenly, Josh looked up as a snatch of conversation from the next booth grabbed his attention.
