SAM LOOKED up in alarm as his boss practically burst out of Senator Wakeman’s office. Sam was on a call with one of her constituents. “I’m so sorry to hear that, Mrs. Feldman,” Sam said, watching as Brad entered his own office and began hastily throwing things into his messenger bag. “Yes, ma’am, I’m sure you’re right. There really ought to be a law against dressing up dogs in sweaters on warm days.”

She started in on her next diatribe. Mrs. Feldman was a regular, and Sam knew she’d easily go on for another ten minutes before he could get a word in edgewise. He put the line on hold and set down the receiver.

He was getting worried about his boss. The man had lost his usual composure completely now. Sam watched as Brad grabbed his coat and pulled the door shut, locking his office behind him, his hands shaking.

The chief of staff brushed by his desk with barely a nod. Instinctively, Sam wanted to follow him to find out what was going on and to make sure Brad didn’t get himself into trouble.

He picked up the receiver. “Mrs. Feldman, can I get your number and call you back? Something has come up that I have to attend to.” He scribbled the number down on a notepad and then jumped up and went after Brad.

Mitch shouted after him. “Sam, where are you going?”

“Emergency. I’ll be back soon.”

He said the “So fuck off” part under his breath.
