Chapter 16

A Wildcat Mk 1 swung down from the skies and pummeled the grass around us.

Harrington kept his head down as it landed and held up a badge. Four men in British military uniforms appeared in full kit. They spread out to secure the landing zone.

Mrs. Davies poked her head out from the open door and gestured for us to join her.

I rearranged Jasmine’s bag over my shoulder and followed Breeze and my girlfriend up to the aircraft. The sheer noise of the thing was a welcome relief from angelic voices in my head. My skull throbbed painfully until I finally sat down inside the aircraft and accepted a headset from Harrington.

“It seems like you’ve had an eventful day,” Mrs. Davies said.

“That’s an understatement, ma’am,” Audrey replied.

Davies smiled at her.

“It’s nice to see you finally, Audrey.”

The troops piled into the chopper across from us once the local police arrived to secure the pub. We left screaming sirens and uniforms behind us and took off into the sky. I settled back in my seat with Breeze on my left and Jasmine on my right. Breeze didn’t make eye contact, but Jasmine keyed into her awkwardness instantly.

A delighted smile touched her face and lit up her eyes.

The Wildcat carried us up into the air and over the green fields of South England. Audrey studied the three of us with curious eyes. Harrington cracked jokes as we went, and some of them were enough to make even Davies smile.

We landed at Briarbridge Manor half an hour later.

The soldiers stayed in the helicopter behind us. Davies ushered us under the soaring ceilings of the manor house and into a comfortable lounge on the upper floor. A wide window let in the afternoon sunlight, and a techhead brought us a fresh pot of coffee, tea, and an arrangement of cookies with jam.

Davies took out a recording device and set it down on the table between us.

I swept the room for any sign of angelic truth-crystals, but the room was absent of any of the tech I’d seen earlier. I’d expected my warning to fall on deaf ears. Davies had obviously respected my threat enough to take us at our word.

I’d had enough angelic fuckery to last me an entire year.

It wasn’t over yet. I had a Contract with some kind of archangel.

Davies started with Audrey. The spotter rapidly recapped her last three months with the kind of clarity that would make most intel analysts drool. She described her time amongst the Family as confronting but not particularly dangerous. The British spy rattled off names, addresses, and outlined the command structure with such detail that I started to suspect she had a photographic memory.

Harrington supplied rapid details of our little situation at the pub.

“The coppers are going to find five blokes busted up in those cars,” he told her. “Not life-threatening injuries. Jasmine here is as good as anyone I’ve seen.”

“Our friends across the pond requested that we specifically keep any mention of their operatives out of our records,” Mrs.
