Chapter Twelve

Mom opens the door and smiles. “Well, this is a nice surprise.” She peers around us. “Did you leave your father to work while you two visit me?”

Kind of. He’s holding down the fort at the agency for me. “Yes and no. I need to have a vision, and I need a safe place to do it,” I say.

“Come in.”

Jez rushes up to us when we walk inside.

I bend down to her. “Mommy needs your help, Jez.”

“You want Jez to help you with the vision?” Mom asks.

“It was Mitchell’s idea. I have to read the murder weapon, and he thinks Jezebel’s calming energy will help me get through it.”

“What can I do?”

Mom isn’t the type to sit back and do nothing.

“I need a quiet space. Max isn’t used to me having visions around him. I can’t have him get freaked out and start barking or interrupt me. So if you could take him upstairs and keep him calm, that would really help.”

Mom’s expression makes it clear she doesn’t like the idea of being separated from me and not knowing what I’m going through, but she doesn’t protest. She hugs me and then Mitchell. “Take care of my little girl.”

“I will do everything in my power to keep her safe,” he says.

Mom gets Max from his bed in the corner of the living room. She has to wake him up, but he goes upstairs with her.

I walk over and sit on the couch. My parents don’t allow the dogs on the furniture, so I pat my lap, and Jez sits next to me, placing her head on my right leg. I hate having her on my right side when I’ll be holding the murder weapon in that hand, but her calming energy will also be touching my right hand during the vision, so it might help keep me from acting on the killer’s emotions.

Mitchell also sits on my right side, and I don’t protest.

“I don’t care what you have to do to restrain me, but do not let me hurt my dog,” I say.

“Protect you and Jez. I’ve got it.”

I hate to admit it, but I’m scared. Mitchell presses his head to mine and takes several deep breaths. He’s helping me calm myself. I focus on his energy, pulling it into me. A little Mitchell Brennan confidence is what I need right now. I can also feel how much he loves me. When I’m ready to read the letter opener, I raise my head and hold out my right hand. My eyes are closed, but I hear Mitchell removing the letter opener from the evidence bag. Then the cool metal touches my palm.

“You’ve got some nice electronics here. How are you able to afford them, but you can’t pay your debt to me?” the killer asks.

“Come on. You know I stole those things. Isn’t that how this all started?”

“Yeah, you steal a lot of things, which is why you can’t be trusted. It’s about time someone put an end to your thievery.
