CHAPTER SEVEN

Enclosed in the Makasutu Culture Forest was a private eco-tourism woodland reserve located in Kombo Central District of the country's West Coast region.

Mandina Lodges was a tiny slice of heaven, and Binta fell in love with it at first sight.

The mangrove creeks and forest reserve's breath-taking beauty made it a popular tourist destination and a favourite for honeymooners.

Bass borrowed his elder brother’s Range Rover SUV for the trip. The sturdy vehicle was the most ideal when travelling to the rural area.

An hour on the road and they arrived at the resort at noon.

The wooden walkway that led to the river lodges was surrounded by expansive greenery. It swayed under their feet as they crossed it.

The hut-shaped stilted lodges looked picturesque from afar, simple but wildly beautiful at the same time. Its light brown roof gleamed proudly in the afternoon sun.

The lower level sporting an outside deck was of two floors whilst the upper one housed an exceptional dayroom and an outdoor lounge. Its separate bedroom was impressive in its size.

The room's smooth wooden panelling made it spacious and airy. The ceiling was high and distended with a rotating fan hanging from it.

Sparsely furnished, it had a massive, canopied bed with a stool beside it, two huge silver flower vases and brown cushioned seats.

Bright white curtains were drawn back from the glass windows to let the breeze in.

After taking a shower, Binta dressed in a strapless knee-length silky violet dress and gold studded blazer.

Then, she went to the upstairs dayroom to wait for Bass to finish doing the same.

She stood on the exposed platform and ran her hands idly over the smooth ligneous railing.

The early November wind sent a chill through her, despite the sunny afternoon.

She felt attuned to her surroundings—the stark green of the mangrove trees and forest. The natural beauty of the still, silver waters all but took her breath away.

Footsteps announced Bass’s presence before his hands slid around her middle, clasping her to him.

She leaned against his solid frame, sighing in absolute pleasure.

“This is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been to,” she told him, smiling at the view. “It’s so peaceful. You cannot help but relax, let your guard down and just be. Can you feel it? The calm that just calls to you?”

“The only thing I can feel right now is how hungry I am,” he rumbled against her temple, his breath warming her skin.

She burst into laughter, turned around and led him by the hand. “Let’s go feed you then.”

When they arrived at the Baobab Bar and Restaurant, there was an outdoor buffet, trays and bowls were filled with scrumptious looking local dishes.

Binta watched with amusement as the tourists tasted each delicacy before deciding which one to take.

She and Bass made their way over to the table. As Bass began scooping Jollof Rice on to his plate, Binta was drawn to the rich-looking Domoda soup. She ladled her plate with it atop the well-cooked rice.

After serving themselves, they headed for the Bantaba; the thatched shaded structure was tall and spacious, its earthiness appealing.
