Angel touched her stomach. The scar was still there. It burned. The knife had only scratched the skin and a bit of flesh inside. Unfortunately, it had hit the side of her stomach, not the front as planned. The stab was less precise and not strong enough. The result was a total failure.
She had tried to kill the baby in her belly. It didnât matter if she had to die as well. But she was here now. She lay down on one of the obstetricianâs beds and stared at her fat belly in disgust.
After Sophie pulled her loose dress up a little, the translucent gel stuck to the surface of her belly. The tip of the scanner was still happily playing with it. She didnât know when Sophie had brought her to this place, because she couldnât remember anything since sheâd cut her belly.
âNine weeks. It will be the tenth week in a few days. Fortunately, the fetus is healthy.â The doctor, a kind woman named Dr. Johnson swept the ultrasound over the light gel that was Angelâs belly.
Angel looked at the screen. A fetus looked small. But the doctor explained that at this stage of pregnancy, tissues such as the nose, lips, eyelids, arms, legs, bones, and heart valves were forming. The heart was beating; the baby was alive.
âThank God!â Sophie stroked Angelâs head until the girl looked away. She let the cold scanner run over her belly.
That the baby was okay was bad news. Maybe something unwanted will remain. The damn baby didnât even know that no one wanted it alive. Maybe it would have tried something else, like jumping off the hospital stairs or crashing into a car on the street. If all that had happened and the fetus hadnât died, sheâd be rushing it out of her womb.
Angel stood on tiptoe when her cell phone rang. Marthaâs name appeared. She sat up after frowning once.
âI have to work,â she said as she wiped the gel off with a tissue. She pulled her dress down to cover her stomach. âIâm already late.â
âBut youâre still sick. You should think about your babyâs condition.â
âSince when do you care so much about my baby?â
âIf thatâs what you want, no problem. But donât forget to take your vitamins and treat the scratches with antibiotics to prevent infection,â Dr. Johnson interrupted.
âSure. Thanks.â Angel shook the doctorâs hand and smiled.
âI hope the baby is healthy when itâs born.â
Angel smiled slightly. The birth was still weeks away. She didnât have to wait for the baby to be born. Wouldnât it be better to abort this baby as soon as possible?
Angel and Sophie parted ways outside the hospital after the woman had pushed them into a taxi. She turned her head briefly as the cab drove away, leaving Sophie standing in front of the hospital. The womanâs face looked almost sad. How strange.
Half an hour later, the taxi pulled up in front of Kiandra. Angel let out a deep sigh as she paid the fare and stepped out of the car, the cold air nipping at her exposed skin.
