Chapter 26

Day 282-Tallia

“Left flank! To the left!” I scream. The soldiers quickly rush to fill the hole created by the drakes’ charge. “Harrison! Take center charge!”

The General grabs his closest commanders and runs into the fray, pushing through the soldiers to save them from the attention of the young drakes.

We’ve made it as far as the third tier of the city. Our left flank collapsed, and is currently being replaced by the reserve soldiers. Amber is rushing to the middle with Harrison, protecting him as best she can. Her lightning is doing wonders against these creatures, burning and stunning them before they can get close to her.

Brial has nearly collapsed, and Cassandra is doing her best to keep her moving. The half-elf used up most of her energy creating a barrier to protect us from the initial charge of the drakes. Mavis failed to mention just how many drakes there were inhabiting this town.

“Force the right!” I scream over the sound of battle. Making up my mind, I rush to the callout and swing my maul into the mouth of one of the drakes. The beast is flung back, knocking down several more of its kin.

The soldiers finally have a chance to gain some ground as I help them push through. For a second, I spot Mavis further into the crowd of drakes. She’s flitting in and out of stealth, landing clean kills every time she appears.

“Thank the gods for that cat,” I whisper. Backing up, I look over the battle and call out more orders. “Reserves! Fill in the center!”

They are quick to obey as they swap out the center, giving the soldiers a chance to rest and heal. The double row of teeth on these drakes have been quick to kill or maim our men. Their hard scales are making it nearly impossible to harm them, and our spells break on their scales before causing damage.

Walking forward, I rally the right side and push into the drakes. Every time I swing my maul, I flip a drake over so we can skewer it. Sweat coats my body as I give every ounce of my strength to push towards the Lord’s Manor.

On my next swing, I over exert myself, and a drake manages to land a bite onto my leg. Although it doesn’t puncture the skin, I’m still pulled from my feet. Hissing in annoyance, I fight to free myself by ripping the mouth of the drake open.

Left vulnerable on the ground, the drakes swarm towards me. Mavis appears by my side, scooping me into her arms before bounding back out of the fight. Cassandra appears a moment later, carrying my maul.

“Thank you, girls,” I tell them.

Mavis grunts before racing back into the fight. Cassandra pauses a moment longer. “Be careful,” she says.

Taking a few moments to regain my breath, I take the time to look over the fight again. The left side has recovered, and is in the process of surrounding several drakes. The path to the manor is quickly approaching the right side, and the center is hammering away at those before them.
