This was not how I expected things were going to go this morning. Everything had been going great. In fact, they’d been going better than great from the minute I arrived up until Quinn and I started talking about children.

And now that I was sitting here in her bed with her crying in my arms, I realized there was still a lot of hurt and emotional turmoil Quinn was going through.

While I had easily figured out she was new to the dating scene, I hadn’t considered that what I’d get with her was going to run so deep. It bothered me a lot to think that her heart was still so battered.

Obviously, I knew that she’d been betrayed by her husband and best friend in the most unforgivable way, but I guess I never really imagined she was still feeling this level of insecurity. Perhaps I should have, and maybe it made me a naïve fool to assume otherwise, but she always seemed so strong and confident. For that reason alone, it never crossed my mind.

Because in my eyes, Quinn had no reason to worry. Her ex-husband had to be the biggest fool on the face of the planet. She was an incredible woman, and you’d think any man who had a chance at something real with her wouldn’t let it slip through his fingers. Any smart man, that is.

I did my best to try and comfort Quinn, allowing her a safe place to get out what she was feeling. And when she finally began to settle, I knew I had to set things straight with her.

“Are you okay?” I asked.

She slowly nodded and answered, “Yeah. Sorry about that.”

I put her chin between my thumb and forefinger and insisted, “Do not apologize for needing to release whatever emotions you’re feeling inside. It’s not good for you to hold it in, and I wouldn’t want you to, regardless of what it’s about. To add to that, if you feel the need to release it, you’re always welcome to do that in my arms for as long as we’ve got what we’ve got going between us. Okay?”

“Okay,” she agreed.

“Good. Now, I want to talk to you about what just happened here,” I began. “And I need to do it being honest with you because that’s what you deserve. Are you okay with that?”

She swallowed hard, making her anxiety evident, but ultimately replied, “Yes, I’m okay with that.”

I let go of her chin, slid my thumb up to her plump bottom lip, and moved it from one side to the other and all along her jaw. Once my fingers curled around the back of her neck, I shared, “I like you, Quinn. If it’s not already evident with everything that happened before today, it should be after what happened the minute I showed up here this morning. That said, I did not realize the level of pain you’re still carrying around with you. Short of you passing out yesterday, I’ve not seen this level of vulnerability from you.
