The Hike
This route combines several different trails in beautiful 645-acre Tryon Creek State Park. Before you begin your hike, you can pick up a trail map and learn about the park’s plants and animals at the nature center. The nature center also has restrooms and drinking fountains.
A large section of the route follows bubbling Tryon Creek as it flows through a shallow forested canyon before it empties into the Willamette River. The route meanders through a second-growth red cedar, Douglas fir, and western hemlock forest and crosses the creek at many different points. Sprinkled into the mix are red alder, black cottonwood, bigleaf maple, and Oregon ash trees.
The different paths wind through a maze of green dotted with yellow violets, trillium, wild ginger, and the feathery fans of sword fern. Yellow orange–colored salmonberries and wild red raspberries make a tasty trail treat in midsummer. At different points along the path, you’ll share the trail with equestrians. If you encounter horses, quietly step off the trail and let them pass.
As you hike, listen for the distinctive calls of blue jays and the chatter of squirrels. Raccoon, skunks, opossums, and black-tailed deer are also residents of this forested park.
