I could not be certain whether the way he addressed me was calculated sarcasm or a foreigner's gaffe, so I ignored it. "He is, I believe, a British subject."

"That is true, sir."

"It is the practice in civilized countries to enable foreigners in custody to be visited by their consuls."

"Certainly."

"The British consul is the representative of the queen. If you wish to go to the trouble of verifying with the consul that I have my mother's authority to make this visit ..."

"Good Lord, that won't be necessary, sir," said Goron, faced by the specter of a diplomatic incident. "He is being held downstairs, but I can have him brought up. He has already been questioned intensively."
