34. [Letter X]

In the best of circumstances I should come to Berlin

as a man ground down by insomnia and headache. My first

order of business will be to creep into a hole somewhere, and cross-

examine myself. And I will only have the right to come to you,

to visit you again in the Immanuelkirchstrasse, if I am somehow able

to free myself from that hole.

Only then will you see me as I should be. Now,

however, whether in the Askanischer Hof, in Marienbad,

or in the Tiergarten, you rightfully look upon me as

an errant child, madman or suchlike.

An errant child to whom you are gracious

more than he deserves, although your kindness should be merited.
