SOAP IT UP

The use of human soap products like shampoo, bubble bath and hand soap can be damaging to a dog’s coat and skin. Human products are too strong; they remove the protective oils coating the dog’s hair and skin that make him water-resistant. Use only shampoo made especially for dogs. You may like to use a medicated shampoo, which will help to keep external parasites at bay.

BRUSHING YOUR BERGAMASCO

Many people ask, “Can you brush that coat?” The answer is yes. An adult or puppy can be brushed. A puppy should have a monthly brushing to help remove small tangles and debris. A pinbrush should be used to brush the puppy coat. A pinbrush will not harm the coat or take out the undercoat. A slicker brush can be used on a fully-flocked and coated Bergamasco. The slicker brush will not damage the dense adult flocks but will remove the surface dirt that settles on the flocks. It is also very healthy to brush the adult coat occasionally; at this stage, the adult dogs seem to enjoy brushing and it helps to keep their coats nice and tidy.

The Bergamasco is a very simple, genuine dog, traits which are reflected in his coat. It is best to let the coat and dog develop as naturally and spontaneously as possible. Human intervention should be there to help the Bergamasco when necessary, but not there to change the overall appearance or characteristics that have been present and celebrated for centuries.

EAR CLEANING

It is important to check the ears regularly and treat any ear problems accordingly. If you look into the Bergamasco’s ear, it is usually pink in color. When you see a Bergamasco scratch his ear on a regular basis, you need to look into the ear. One of the signs of an ear infection is a dark brown discharge. You can usually treat a mild ear infection with a prepared boric and acetic acid solution. If the infection persists, your vet can prescribe an antibiotic ointment, which is usually effective.

FOOT MAINTENANCE

The Bergamasco’s feet should be checked for any possible stones or hard mud that can cause discomfort. Debris can lodge or mud can build up in the hair between the pads. If you notice that the dog is limping slightly or biting his feet, he may be indicating to you that there is some foreign object caught in his pad. For those who have snow in the winter, it is especially important to remove the ice chunks that can quickly settle under his paws, which can cause a cold burn if left in for long.
