We were sitting at our lab table, working on an assignment, when he leaned over and casually asked me if I was going to prom.

“No,” I replied, hoping he wouldn’t ask me why.

I’d worked hard on having an active social life my senior year, but I still hadn’t dated much. There were a few dates here and there, but it was like I was cursed or something. The second I thought the relationship might actually go somewhere, the guy would suddenly become disinterested.

Whenever that happened, I always thought back to my fight with Jax and wondered if maybe he had been right. Was I clingy? I didn’t think so, and I tried to be conscientious to make sure I wasn’t coming across that way. But there had to be something wrong with me if every guy I liked ended up running for the hills.

Gabe didn’t question it. Instead, he just replied with, “Can I change your mind if I ask you to go with me?”

Before I could talk myself out of it, I nodded. “Sure. That sounds like fun.”

When I got home that evening, Shelly took me shopping for a dress. Because it was so close to prom, the dress selection was minimal, but thankfully, I found a gorgeous, glittery light-blue dress in a mermaid silhouette, which fit me perfectly.
