“A pretty gruesome tale,” Náni said.

“What a pair of bunglers,” said Nick. “If they’d left that bag untouched, it would still be at the bottom of the sea. Lukas would be one more unsolved, missing person case.”

“I know. I guess I need to organise some divers to find the other bags.”

“Hmmm. Probably have to. An expensive and pointless exercise, from our perspective, but you need to try. The Hedingers have a right to expect that. And so do the swimmers and snorkellers at Triópetra, come to that. You don’t need more gory bits floating up.”

“Not that any of the other bags were ripped.”

“Maybe not, but who knows what happens on a rocky seabed?”

She nodded and went out to delegate the thankless task to one of her older constables, Michális. When she returned, several minutes later, it was with coffee and pastries.

“I think we deserve these,” she said.

“I don’t care if we do or not, they look great,” said Nick.

“We should interview Theo, next,” she said, handing Nick a plate. “If we can be sure he was not involved, even if he thought something was going on, then we can let him go.”

“Makes sense.”

“And then I want to charge Gregór with the murder of Lukas.”

“Why?”

“Because I think he did it.”

“We have no proof yet – no witness, no motive.”

“Come on, he was paid to do it and he had the body propped up in his barn.”

“Maybe, but by whom, and why? We know none of those things, Náni. We don’t even know how Lukas died.”

“What do you suggest, Nick?”

“Look, I’m not against charging him but that doesn’t mean I’m sure he’s guilty. If he’s facing fifteen or more years in jail, he might decide to enlighten us a little more. Without that, we have a heap more work before any murder charge will stick.”

“Are you satisfied Yiánnis and Leftéris told us the truth this morning?”

“I think so.”

“So, they weren’t involved with the murder itself?”

“Probably not.”

“Wasn’t it a bit extreme to cart you off and dump you in the sea then?”

“I did point that out at the time, but they weren’t impressed by my arguments. Didn’t think they’d get caught. And now you’ve let them off that little misdemeanour anyway.”

“Don’t be sarcastic, Nick. It doesn’t suit you. We’ve got them for accessories now. No question. And, despite what I said in there, I’ll be pushing for the maximum sentence for that, in the circumstances.”

“Good. Because those bastards didn’t expect me to survive, as you saw.”

“I did. Now, it’s ten forty-five, shall we do the other two before lunch?”

“Why not.”

They were ready to begin the second interview with Theo when they spotted Galánis hovering outside the interview room.

“Can I help you, kýrie Galáni?” asked Náni.

“I have been asked to act for this set of brothers too, Sergeant. I don’t feel it’s a conflict of interest, so I’ve agreed, but I thought I’d make sure you’re comfortable with that.”

“I’m not sure my comfort or otherwise is relevant, Galáni. It’s a matter for your clients and your ethics.
