Chapter Eleven

Simone adjusted her clothing and smoothed her hair back into the kerchief. She cast a glance at the young man by her side and shook her head. It had been over before it began, and she was annoyed. The young men had talked big, but several grunts later, he was finished. An incredible disappointment.

She had the intense urge to press her fingers between her legs and climax herself, but she was over the entire episode. The young man dressed quickly, and with a quick kiss, he left. He had taken her quickly on one of the wooden desks that faced the front where a podium and large chalkboard stood.

She picked up a piece of chalk and wrote her name on the board, though it was sloppily done. Her schooling had not been much beyond the basics. She wiped the name off with her hand. The classroom where they had coupled overlooked the small garden below.

The colorful lanterns waved prettily in the dark night. It was getting late. People would be leaving soon, and she had promised to help Evelyn clean up afterwards. It was quiet in the classroom, with no one about. It was peaceful too. She could imagine the room full of hopeful girls wanting to know the answer to the teacher’s questions. She was pleased to have known Evelyn and become a part of her dream in some small way. The school would benefit girls and their futures, which was something tremendous.

Simone had decided to go downstairs when a scraping noise in one of the classrooms farther down the hall caught her attention. So, she was not the only one who had decided to put the classroom to good use. When she opened the door to the hallway, she heard a creaking sound followed by something splashing onto the floor. Oh no!

Had the plumbing broken and now the building was flooding? She moved quickly down the hallway, bumped into a chair, and cried out. Her shin ached as she rubbed it. When she entered the classroom where she’d heard the noise, a smell assaulted her nostrils.

There was a pungent, oily smell in the air. Simone frowned. It was dark in the room, as the shutters were closed. Taking a step inside the room, she saw the floor was wet. Why was the floor wet? A pungent smell was thick in the air, and she knew she must tell Evelyn. But as she turned slightly to the left, she saw the large black chalkboard facing her.

The chalkboard was on a large easel so that it could be maneuvered to turn upside down to use the opposite side as well. As her eyes adjusted to the light, a shiver of fear crept up her spine. Was there someone in the room with her? No, she admonished herself. She was seeing things. The room was dark and filled with shadows. She tried to concentrate on the space beyond the chalkboard. Was there someone behind it?

Simone looked but could see nothing. She shook herself mentally.
