The sky wasn’t quite pitch black by time they made it back, but it was getting close. The first stars of the night were beginning to appear, twinkling to their own musical song. Despite being stranded, it really was a beautiful spot. Maybe when she got back to land, she’d inquire about whether the island belonged to anyone yet. It would be the perfect getaway from civilization, away from the crowds. She could likely afford it now.

“You look deep in thought? What's on your mind,” Ethan asked.

“Have you ever watched Island life?”

He leaned down and grabbed a handful of waiting berries, mushy from the heat of the sun. “You mean the show where people buy their own islands?”

“Yeah.”

“Once or twice.”

“That’s what I want,” she said, grabbing a mango and taking a bite.

“To be on the show?”

“No. I don’t want to be on camera again.” She’d had enough of that when she was rescued and faced questions people should never have asked on camera. Private things no one else had the right to know.

“If we get rescued, you do realize that they’ll want to interview you, right?”

“Ain’t gonna happen. My plan is to disappear, and I finally have the means to do it.”

He tilted his head and studied her. “How so?”

Jenna reached into her pocket, and her fingers closed around her earlier discovery. Gently, she removed her hand from the zipped pocket, not wanting to scratch her find. She held out her hand and slowly opened her fingers, watching with pleasure as Ethan’s eyes widened.

“Hot damn!” he said, his jaw dropping.

In her hand sat the largest blue diamond he had ever seen, still partially encased in rock.

“Do you realize how much money you’re holding right there?” Ethan asked.

“Enough to buy this island. If it is for sale, that is.”

“Darling, you are going to be one of the richest women in the world. That thing should sell for at least seventy million.”

Jenna gasped as she held it up in front of her, examining it in the light of the campfire. She hadn’t realized it would sell for that much. She figured fifteen to twenty million maybe. Her and her parents would never want again. Her dad would never have to travel and leave her mom behind. They could finally have the retirement they deserved.

Ethan held his hand out, and she passed him the diamond. “Were there any more down there?”

“I couldn’t tell. It was too dark. This one happened to be on the ground beside me when I landed.”

Two inches the other way and she would have landed right on top of it, crunching the first good thing in her life. Mind you, her find would only matter if they were rescued. And now, more than ever, she wanted that to happen. She wanted to sell it and get oodles of money.

Ethan held it up in the air and examined it. “There must have been an earthquake or something that loosened it from the rock face. We could be sitting on top of a diamond mine.
