âWe have to destroy this place,â Therese said.
Philemon, in human form again, tipped his head toward the thumps and clatters upstairs, where Marchand was gleefully looting. âHe wonât like it.â
âI donât care what he likes. We canât carry off everything, and we donât dare leave anything behind. LeKestraâs men, or someone elseââ
âNo, I agree. Iâll be happy to set the fire, if you canât.â
âIâll do it,â she said. âMarchand! Letâs go.â
The trader appeared at the top of the stairs, dragging a bulging sack as large as himself. âBut Iâve barely got started. Thereâs enough goods here toââ
âWeâre leaving, Marchand, and weâre torching the place. Take what youâve got and letâs go.â
âYouâre a hard one, Therese,â Marchand complained. He hauled his sack down the steps. At the bottom he thrust it at Philemon. âHere, youâre young and strapping. Make yourself useful. Iâll fetch the carriage.â
Therese blinked. âWe have a carriage?â
âOf course. I drove off the horses when I fired the barn, but first I hitched a pair to a carriage. Itâs tied in the woods, out of sight of the house. Yâthink Iâd haul this much loot on my back? Weâre going home in style.â
So they did, with Marchand handling the reins and Therese and Philemon riding inside, opposite Marchandâs sack of pilfered trade goods, the inferno that had been Yvesâ fortress lighting the way. Both mage and shapechanger leaned out the windows to watch the flames leap at the sky.
âIt makes an impressive sight, donât you think?â Philemon observed.
âYes,â Therese said, heavy-hearted. âLeKestraâs sure to hear of it.â
âLeKestraâs going to have a plateful.â Philemonâs eyes slitted. âIt wonât take long for the âhostagesâ to recover. For us, word travels on wings. This barbarity of his will unite the shapechangers.â He flashed a glance at her. âAnd the conjurers as well?â
Therese considered long before she answered. âI donât know. Weâre an individualistic lot. But maybe at last weâve had enough. There may be some whoâll join you. Marchand knows where they are. Heâll carry word.â
âAnd you, Therese? Will you stand with us?â
She considered longer still. How long had she awaited and dreaded this moment, the chance to make a difference. âIâm not much of a fighter ... but Iâll do what I can.â
Philemon chuckled. âYouâre a better fighter than you think. And more dangerous than you know.â
Behind them, the roof of Yvesâ stronghold fell in. Therese shuddered at the distant crash. Philemon covered her hands with his. She didnât pull away.
