EILAT HAD TAKEN ON the atmosphere of a street festival. Though the march was not until the next day, students congregated along the beach and in front of every café in town. The military had made their initial showing in order to supplement the local police, and yesterday, Gideon and Rachel had met with the core team of officials in charge of keeping the peace. Nothing untoward was expected, but all the same, Gideon had been feeling tense. Last night, he’d scarcely slept, when usually he slept like the dead.
Gear bags slung over their backs, he and Rachel wove through the crowd and down the seaside walk to the dive shop.
“It’s all one big party,” Rachel said to him over the noise of students dancing to the driving beat of techno music blaring from a radio. “Too big. Fools…”
Gideon considered what she said and wondered if she had the same sense of discomfort that had seized him. Though they were far from the country’s hot zones, the march tomorrow would be a rich target, richer than a border crossing, a market, a nightclub, or any of the usual terrorism locales. At this point, though, there was nothing he could do.
“This party isn’t as big as the one in our bed this morning,” he said teasingly to Rachel in an effort to keep their moods light. “Too bad I wore you out.”
“We’ll see who goes first tonight,” she said, the glint of challenge bright in her brown eyes.
“You’re on.” This was one aspect of her competitive nature that he enjoyed down to the soles of his feet.
The covered area where the divers assembled their gear was as packed as the rest of the seaside. Rachel and Gideon managed to stake a claim at the end of one bench just inside the shelter’s entryway.
“Looks like it’s going to be one of those follow-the-leader dives,” Rachel said. “I should have asked how many others were booked.”
“You’ll love it all the same once we’re down there,” Gideon replied as he checked out his regulator.
When he looked up, they were there again—the young couple. He was wearing bathing trunks and a short-sleeved shirt, ready to go for a dive. The girl must have just accompanied him to see him off. She wore a flowing skirt and a loose, long-sleeved gauzy black top.
They edged into the shelter. Since no space on the benches remained, the young man set his dive bag on the ground and looked around as though seeking the dive master. He seemed to have a case of neophyte’s nerves.
“First time?” Gideon asked in Hebrew, and got no response. He tried again in Arabic, but the man’s attention had wandered elsewhere. His lover was clasping his elbow and tugging at him, as though she didn’t intend to let him go.
Sweet, he thought. Until he noticed her tears.
The fine hairs on the back of Gideon’s neck stood up. He might be slow in taking the clues God sent his way, but he wasn’t hopelessly stupid. He glanced over at Rachel, who sat next to him on the bench.
