The DSM and Relationships

What might be the proper diagnosis for an ATCK who is struggling with relationship challenges? This is a tough question. It would depend on the severity of the problems, the length of time they have been encountering these challenges, and if they meet certain criteria in the DSM. In most cases, they meet the criteria for either an Adjustment Disorder or a Mood Disorder of some type.

Things You Should Know

Kay Eakin in her writings for the United States Family Liaison Office in Washington, DC, made this statement, “There is some indication that TCKs often do not learn problem-solving skills in handling interpersonal relationships. With a built-in rotational cycle, there is a temptation to simply leave a problem without resolving it. Because of the importance of people rather then [sic] place, this baggage gets carried on to the next location and may re-emerge and impact the development of new relationships” (Eakin, 1999, p. 20).
