CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

It was time for hard truths, Katie knew, as she sat in the small diner, looking across the table at Leblanc. He was angry, withdrawn, in a bad mood with himself and the world. She suspected there were things going on in his head that he wasn't telling her, and that made her worried.

For now, though, she had to explain her decision, and do so calmly, because she didn’t want a fight.

She'd seen what Wolfe had done to Leblanc, a tough, experienced officer. She'd seen the devious cunning he'd used in setting his traps.

That had forced her to make a tough, but necessary, call.

"I discussed it with the local RCMP while you were getting checked out," she said. "We agreed to pull the teams off the ground search. They’re continuing with the helicopter surveillance for another hour. The wind is picking up fast, so that will soon be too dangerous. But until it's light, it's too risky for anyone to be out on foot. I can't risk other lives. Not against someone who operates the way Wolfe does."

"You're saying this because he got the better of me?" he said, glowering at her. “That’s not enough of a reason.”

She shook her head. She could see he wasn't ready to admit that he was in no shape for a manhunt.

"He's not beaten, not yet. He'll be regrouping as we are speaking. And we might have a long way to go before we catch him. Plus, the weather’s not on our side. There’s a gale blowing in tonight. That will create movement and noise, and make it impossible for the search party to be properly alert. It increases the chances that he could trap them, or they could miss something important."

"We should be out there, on the ground, looking for him," Leblanc insisted. "Now, while we have the chance."

"We'll be out there looking for him in a few hours," she said. "But it's too dangerous to do so now. If he's hurt you, what's to stop him doing the same to a patrol or a tracker? The man's already killed multiple times. He sets lethal traps, and darkness would give him a huge advantage. I can't put others at such high risk."

"You think he's too much for us? We're trained. We're professional. We could go."

"I know that," Katie said. "But we're not going to catch him by chasing after him blindly. He's a hunter. He can read the terrain. He can disappear, and he knows how to hide from sight."

"I still think it’s wrong," he grumbled, looking away from her, as if he was talking to himself.

"Risk versus benefits,” she reminded him. “The risk is too great.”

"I think otherwise," Leblanc said, and he sounded bleak. Pushing his empty plate away, he rose to his feet, and she followed suit.

"I'm going to get some rest," he snapped.

He got to his feet and limped out of the eatery.

Katie watched him go, feeling deeply concerned.

She knew some of what was bothering him. But she felt sure he was not telling her everything.
