Discuss the two sets of ratings with your mentor. Probe more deeply into any item where your own ratings differ from your mentor’s by three or four points in order to clarify and learn from the reason for such a discrepancy.

Carr, Herman, and Harris (2001) have developed the Monthly Focus Chart, a comprehensive set of concerns that protégés may have as they go through their first year of teaching. The concerns are organized by month (August through April) and are grouped into the following categories: informational, instructional, personal, management, results, and collaboration. In August, for example, a protégé will want to become familiar with the physical setup of the school and location of key facilities, know how to acquire necessary supplies, and be acquainted with the school’s student discipline policies. In January, major concerns include being familiar with resources available from state and federal programs, preparing students to take upcoming state exams, and preparing post holiday lesson plans.

The Center for Curriculum Renewal, developers of the Monthly Focus Chart, has agreed to provide the chart to readers of this book who call 802-860-6802 or who e-mail their request to <[email protected]>.
