CHAPTER 28

Dr. Lincoln scribbles away in her folder. When she’s done she interrogates, “at any point did you ask him to sign the NDA?”

Was she not listening to my half an hour rant? “I spent 30 minutes telling you how I asked him to sign it and how he got angry about it.”

“No, you spent 30 minutes telling me how you told him he needed to sign the NDA. You never asked him,” she corrects. Is this a matter of technicality? I think not.

“It was still the essence of my side of the argument,” I state.

“Zoie, the essence isn’t always the essence. Do you think if you asked him the conversation would’ve ended differently?”

“Not really. He hated the idea.”

“And why do you think that is?” she asks.

“I don’t know,” I reply.

“Wouldn’t asking him possibly open up a discussion about why he didn’t want to sign it?”

“He did tell me why he didn’t want to. He wants me to tell him out of trust and I can’t allow myself to be that stupid,” I tell her.

“Here’s what I think of it. If you had asked him to sign the NDA and not make it out to be a demand, maybe he would’ve been more receptive of the idea. Maybe he would’ve told you the real reason why he doesn’t want to sign it.”

“What do you mean– real reason?” I ask her.

“Well has he ever gotten this angry with you before, or lost his cool?”

“No, he hasn’t.”

“Exactly. Based on what you’ve told me he’s very understanding and NDAs are definitely not new to him. However, his reaction is a bit unexpected. Maybe if it was any other random person it would’ve been expected. It could mean that Jaxson’s opposition of the idea may not be solely about you trusting him but his experience from a previous situation.”

I sigh for the hundredth time at the realization of me messing up once again. I was trying to look out for myself and I completely blindsided him and disregarded his feelings. “Okay, I screwed up. What do I do now?”

“That’s for you to decide. I’d suggest reaching out to talk to him. Try not to blindside him. Give him a chance to explain. Forget the fact that you’re a celebrity for a minute and have a conversation like a normal couple. No strings, no labels, no contracts.”

“What if he never speaks to me again? All because I self-sabotaged?”

“Two people who genuinely care about each other don’t end things over an unpacked disagreement. They talk it through first and then make hard decisions.”

I take a moment to internalize her suggestions as I lay back on the body length couch. Soon she interrupts my thoughts, “Now, you told me there’s something else you wanted to talk to me about. Shall we dive in?”

Ahh yes, the mugging.

“I was mugged,” I simply tell her. I continue giving her details about the awful day straight up to the point where Evelyn made her appearance. Instead of scribbling as she usually does, she listens attentively.
