A bow square is handy for measuring how far your nocking points sits above the arrow shelf.
As your experience and understanding of the bare shaft tuning process progresses, you’ll begin to understand all the variables that affect arrow flight. For instance, for a shaft that is slightly underspined (not stiff enough), a lighter field point or broadhead can be used. Less weight on the front of the arrow requires it to have less spine. For arrows that are slightly overspined, a heavier field point or broadhead can be used. More weight up front will cause the arrow to flex more as it leaves the bow.
BARE SHAFT TUNING FOR ALUMINUM AND CARBON ARROWS
Once you have your nocking point located properly on the string, about ¾ inch above the shelf, then grab one of your full-length shafts that has a nock glued on and a field point on the end. Remember, your finished arrow length is your draw length plus 1½ inches. The arrow can be longer than that, but not shorter. Measure this distance starting at the bottom of the nock groove toward the tip of the arrow, and make a mark on the shaft at the minimum length your arrow can be. This will help you avoid cutting the shaft too short while tuning. Be sure to use good shooting form when bare shaft tuning, as poor form may cause arrow flight problems that confuse the tuning process. Refer to chapter 4 for specifics. Most instinctive shooters cant, or tilt, the bow to one side to get the top limb out of the way and get a clear sight picture. During bare shaft tuning, however, it’s best to hold the bow in as close to a vertical position as possible so that you can better interpret what the arrow is doing, both in flight and after impact. As you go through the bare shaft tuning process, you’ll see the significance of this. With the bow canted, it’s more difficult to tell the difference between nock high and nock left or nock low and nock right.
