Trey awoke with a start. It was a moment before he knew where he was. The room was dark. He looked up toward his father’s room. The door was open, the light was on. “Dad?” he called. It brought back the memory of the night before and that stung. Trey shook it off. “Pop?”

No answer. Trey mounted the stairs, went into the room. Found the bed a mess, the shower empty, his father’s luggage there, but—it took a moment to register—his car keys missing. Car keys and wallet. His father was gone. But where? Why?

A needle of anxiety nicked his chest. Where could his father have gotten to after two in the morning? What could he have needed so badly? And even if he did need something, the hotel was practically a city unto itself. You could find anything here, right in walking distance. What could he have gone out for that required him to take the car?

Confused, Trey turned toward the door. Then he saw it, his father’s writing pad, on the floor beside the bed. He had been so secretive about that thing, so secretive about a lot of things, now that Trey thought about it. Every time you looked, he was hunched over it, writing something he wouldn’t let you see.

Songwriting, he said. Claimed.

It was all impulse from there. Trey picked up the legal pad, its pages dense with his father’s handwriting. He steeled himself and began to read.
