An imaginative lighting designer could not have chosen a better place in Schubert’s ‘Death and the Maiden’ string quartet for a power cut. Schubert first explored the struggle between Death and a terrified maiden in his earlier song of the same name. He returned to the subject with the quartet in 1824, when he was already suffering from the illness that probably killed him four years later and when Beethoven was just embarking on his last string quartets. In Schubert’s string quartet the maiden’s final capitulation is conveyed towards the end of the slow movement by a slowing pulse in the viola part:
