Poet Cheryl Savageau, of Abenaki descent, writes about the trouble she got into in graduate school when writing about the Indians who were rendered invisible in paintings and books. (You’ll find lines from her poem at the beginning of this book.) “Stop writing what isn’t in the text,” her professor tells her. As you’ve seen, not being in the text is just our entire history.

At the end of chapter 1, you noticed our absence. Now think about that absence—in movies, books, conversations, and committees—and try insisting on our presence. Stop replacing us and begin the work of re-placing Black and Indigenous people into these landscapes.

That might mean stepping back from a committee to create space for Indigenous representation. It could mean suggesting a book written by an Indigenous author for your book club. It could mean speaking up and saying that yes, you can imagine such a thing happening.

Wherever you notice our absence, think about how you might be able to assert our presence.
