ONE EVENING EARLY in the semester, I was sitting in my usual place at the northern end of the study hall, where the first-year students sat, when my gaze caught the sight of a student walking into the study hall.

He was a tall, skinny guy, with beautiful dark hair and light eyes. His clothes were neat and clean, and his posture and pace projected confidence.

I had noticed him before. He was a year older than me and very popular, but not the best when it came to studying, which is probably why I hadn’t seen him in the study hall before. It was now the evening study session, when we had some freedom to study whatever we wanted, so I gathered my courage and walked over to him. His name was Chesky.

“Do you have a study partner?” I asked.

“Well, no, but I am not in the study hall most evenings,” Chesky said, and I heard in his voice a sweet Canadian undertone. I didn’t care if he studied at all, I just wanted to be his friend.

“Either way,” I responded, “I just started studying Mishna Berura, on the laws of Sefirah. They are easy and fun. You should join me!” Sefirah is the seven-week period between the holidays of Passover and Shavuos.

“You want to study with me?” he asked, surprised. Apparently, I already had a reputation as a smart student, but I think that was based more on my rabbinic clothing than on other students actually knowing me.

“Well, I just got here, and it’s not easy to find a study partner in the middle of the year,” I replied.

“Okay, sure!” Chesky said. “Let’s do this!”

I felt a strange tingle.

It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. And so much more.

But that part would come later.
