First and foremost, you must understand that those toward whom you are deploying wrathful compassion are not bad but misguided. They are confused and intoxicated by their own Three Poisons.
As such, they are deserving of compassion and you must try not to judge them or harbor feelings such as hatred toward them.
In being minded to act wrathfully, you should feel a sense of reluctance to do so. This has nothing to do with hesitating, for you might not have this luxury.
In your heart, there should be a remorseful quality that informs your action. This will prevent you from getting carried away in the energy of your destructive means and doing more damage than is necessary.
In the end, you should not celebrate your victory, but rather show regret for actions that needed to be done.
Such an approach protects you from falling into the chasm of self-righteousness and rationalized justifications. For one thing, until you are enlightened, you really cannot tell if the person or cause you oppose is in error or more steeped in the Three Poisons than yourself. Thus, if you are truly trying to act with wrathful compassion, you hope for the best possible outcome, free from self-interest or partisanship. In that way, you can more easily accept and work with what befalls you as a result of your actions. For in the Dharma, there is no such thing as retaliation (see box on page 116). There is a desire to see justice, but not out of a sense of revenge or leveling the score. Aggression met with aggression just creates bad blood â and bad karma â on both sides. The Buddha would have agreed with the old Welsh saying at the beginning of this chapter.
