Having now studied the pros and cons of roses, I decided to start slow and planted two ramblers on the fence. On Vita Sackville-West’s recommendation, I planted Lawrence Johnson. And Madame Alfred Carriere, which in Sackville-West’s words is “white, flushed with shell-pink with the advantage of a sweet, true-rose scent, and will go to the eaves of any reasonably proportioned house.” Both are taking a while to settle in; only two small flowers bloomed. While I’ve learned you can’t rush the classics and I’ll certainly see what happens next year, I’m on the fence about keeping them in the years to come.

At the end of the day, the voice that echoes most prominently is that of Fernando Caruncho, who said, “For me the flower is the ultimate expression of the beauty of nature in its vegetable sense, so my respect for roses and flowers is the same as that for my dreams, because roses represent dreams.”
