Sam searched for Sasha for what seemed hours, but the jungle was so thick she could have been within armâs distance and he would have still missed seeing her. His gut churned with worry. Apart from getting lost, all sorts of animals, including water buffalo, wild goats and snakes, lurked in the jungle and could do her harm. It was no use trying to phone her. He didnât have her phone number, and even if he had, there was no service in this remote area. The only option was to return to the boat and radio for help.
He trudged back with a heavy heart, numbness weighing down his limbs. Heâd chased her away, just as the chance to regain some sort of relationship with his children, and even perhaps, Eloise, had presented itself. What a fool heâd been.
The truth was, Sasha had shocked him when she presented him with the ticket, and he hadnât thought how his words might hurt her. Heâd been referring to the fact that he had no resources or job in Australia, but he understood how it must have sounded. He could kick himself. He was nothing but an old fool.
Relief filled him when he broke through the jungle into the daylight. Sasha was on board, slumped against the cockpit, arms crossed. He quickly jumped aboard and sat beside her. âIâm sorry, Sasha. I didnât mean it like that. Will you forgive me?â
She didnât move, but he could tell by her thin lips that she was struggling with her emotions. Heâd really made a mess of things. Finally, she lifted her head and faced him. âYes. But I want to go home.â
He blew out a breath. âOkay. Letâs go.â He pulled in the anchor, started the engine and headed back to San Vicente. There were no stories this time. No laughter. No easy companionship. She sat, staring ahead, unmoving, the whole trip. As much as his heart broke, he still believed that she was better off without him. He was a pathetic loser who didnât deserve a daughter like her.
