Chapter 9
Angus let himself into the house and hung up his coat, sighing heavily. It had been a tough day at work and coming home to an empty house was starting to get to him. Amyâs missing presence was becoming almost tangible.
Heâd stopped by Callum and Fleurâs house after work, trying to delay the inevitable, only to feel out of place watching them sitting together happily with their children doing their homework at the table. When Fleur asked him to stay for dinner heâd politely declined, although he was hungry after having worked through his lunch break.
âIf Amy isnât back in the next few days, Iâll drive down and see her,â Fleur said as she walked him to the front door.
Angus felt the same way himself. The only thing stopping him from driving straight to Melbourne was the fear that if he tried to push Amy into returning before she was ready, he would only succeed in pushing her away for good. Cherieâs words haunted him.
He was rummaging through the kitchen cupboards trying to find something to eat when the doorbell rang. Hope leaped inside that it was Amy, even as he knew that was ridiculous. Why would she ring the doorbell to her own home?
It was Cherie. Trying to hide his disappointment, Angus smiled politely.
âI dropped by to invite you to a barbecue Iâm having this weekend,â she said with a chirp in her voice. She wore a floaty dress and her eyes were ringed with kohl.
âThanks,â he said, âIâll have to think about it.â But I donât have anything else going on, he thought glumly.
Cherie seemed to sense how he was feeling. Cocking her head to one side, she smiled sympathetically. âWould you like some company? You look how I feel.â
He held the door open. She was empathetic. In that regard, she reminded him of Amy.
She followed him into the kitchen. He fixed them both a drink then leaned against the counter while she sat at the breakfast bar.
âSo, how are you? Any more word from your wife?â
âWeâve spoken. Sheâs doing better.â He shrugged. Although Cherie was kind, he didnât want to discuss Amy with her in any depth. He already felt heâd said too much the other night. Cherie seemed to sense that and began to make chit-chat about her day, then asked him about his. As Angus told her about his work at Salfordâs renewable energy firm and his passion for sustainability, Cherie listened intently. He couldnât help but think how long it had been since Amy had given him this level of undivided attention, although he immediately felt disloyal at the thought. Even so, it was flattering how genuinely interested Cherie seemed.
He heard a warning bell in his head but pushed it to one side, telling himself not to be uncharitable. She was a nice woman and it was only Christian to be hospitable.
But then she scooted towards him on her chair. Since his back was in the corner and he couldnât move away, he realised how close they were.
