The walk across the green, back to my house was over far too quickly for my liking; I wasnât ready for this evening to be over⦠just yet.
âI had fun tonight,â I say, pulling my coat tighter around me. If I had thought it was cold earlier, the temperature must have dropped, at least, ten degrees in the last few hours.
âMe too,â Luke agrees. He hesitates before adding, âCan I tell you something?â
âOf course.â
âIâm not ready for this to end just yet,â he admits. âI mean-â
âI know what you mean,â I agree. I shiver and Luke immediately removes his coat and drapes it around my shoulders. I sigh, instantly enveloped in his warmth. âArenât you cold, now?â I ask.
âA bit but I can put the heat on when Iâm in the car; I thaw out pretty quickly,â he assures me. âAnyway, Iâd hate for you to freeze to death on our first date.â
I hesitate for a moment before finally looking at him. âSo, this is a date then?â
âIf thatâs okay with you?â he says, meeting my gaze expectantly.
I nod, unable to keep my smile at bay. âThatâs more than okay with me.â
âGood; Iâm glad weâre on the same page.â
These words turn my blood to ice, knowing weâre not quite on the same page yet; he deserves to know the whole truth. âActually, thereâs something you should know,â I begin and, as I force myself to look at him, I see the uncertainty in his eyes.
âWhat is it?â
âIâm seeing Mike tomorrow,â I confess, now wishing Iâd mentioned this earlier. âHeâs dropping by to the see the children. I know I should have said something sooner but-â
âSo, what does that mean?â Luke asks quietly. âAre you going to try and get things back on track with him?â
It was the question Iâd been asking myself all of last night and all of today; if youâd have asked me yesterday, I would have said yes but, now⦠I stop, taking Lukeâs arm and turning him to face me. âNo, Iâm not.â
For a moment, Luke looks hopeful but then itâs gone as he asks, âDo you want to put things on hold between us while you sort things out with Mike.â
âI donât want that, either,â I assure him. âI meant it when I said Iâd had fun tonight; I want to see where this goes.â
âAre you sure because I donât want to get in the way of anything-â
I squeeze his hands, trying to reassure him, to make him see that I mean what I say. âIâm sure.â
He smiles as all the tension of the last few minutes disappears. âGood.â He takes my hand, interlocking our fingers as we walk the rest of the way home in silence.
As we reach the gate, I notice a light coming from the living room and groan inwardly; Mum clearly wants the low-down on my date.
âWell, this is me,â I announce, turning to face him.
Pointing down the street, he says, âMy carâs just down there.â Turning back to me, he shuffles his feet.
