Eight years later...
âLynn! Maddie!â I yell, the partners in crime had some explaining to do. I shouldâve known they were planning something when Lynn gave me a honey-do-list two pages long, but I started getting suspicious after spending an hour looking for some interesting items. Donât get me wrong, I willingly do everything I can for my girls, and wanted to get done quickly to make it home to continue our tradition. On Fridays, we binge reruns of a show, weekly taking turns choosing which itâll be.
My wife knows I can be a stubborn fool, which means sheâs also aware I wouldnât ask for help because thereâs something about knowing I can solve everything for my family that fills me with pride. However, after searching the aisles for at least a hundred times, and no, Iâm not exaggerating, I admitted defeat and made my way to Mrs. June. Sheâd worked at the local market for years, so if anyone would know, itâd be her. When I asked where the non-fat humus was, she stared at me like Iâd lost my ever-loving mind.
Not understanding why, I showed her the list and it took her five minutes to stop laughing, but I was not amused. It seems my wife had given me items that didnât exist, only I hadnât the slightest clue why until our neighbor, Jack, wanted to know how I was doing. I thought nothing of it, then he proceeded to tell me how happy he was his son, Lane, was taking my daughter to the prom. No way! My baby is too young to date.
Finding the guilty parties, I say with the sternest expression I can muster, âI canât believe you sent me on a wild goose chase.â
My wife, not appearing ashamed in the slightest, can barely contain her laughter. At her feet is Blue, and if I didnât know better, Iâd swear he was amused, too. âI have to give you credit though, you actually asked for help. I was so sure you werenât going to, then Mrs. June called to let me know my plan failed.â
That traitor! âI guess you can teach an old dog new tricks, huh, Blue?â All I get is a mild head lift, showing me heâs not getting involved. Lynn hasnât needed him as a support dog for a couple years, and since his retirement, so to speak, heâs learned a new trick â laying by the bed, waiting for his breakfast and daily walk.
âWell, nothing you can do now, dad. Iâm dressed up and going with Lane. A family rule is to make sure to live every moment, and this is an important one, so either take pictures or be left out,â my now eighteen-year-old sasses, hands on her hips, reminding me so much of Malia, my mind recalling my two best friends at our prom.
Maddie is gorgeous in a royal blue dress, blonde hair perfectly styled, and I canât help but smile. Sheâs right, these are definitely the memories I donât want to miss.
