“No one to save you now,” it hissed.
And my blood chilled in my veins. It was right. Ninja Chick and Kwan were out there chasing it. I felt its joy at my fear and doubt. What if it slipped by them somehow and came back here? I was a helpless little rabbit.
“Devour it before anyone sees.” Images of myself, dismembered and gushing blood under the touch of dozens of tentacles of darkness filled my mind, along with the creature’s lust to feed. And its anger. Some part of it was pissed off that I was still breathing. I suppose it wasn’t used to having its food escape twice in a row.
Sure, I hadn’t escaped on my own, but still.
I turned and tried to run away, but the dark things in the shadows lashed out, tearing at my arms and legs. “Maybe now.” The wendigo said, opening its maw.
Something beat at my face. I woke to black feathers and the croaking of an agitated raven.
“Okay, okay,” I said, waving it off. “I’ll let you out, I get it.”
I plodded to the door and shook the bird off my arm, blinking blearily at the murky color of the darkness that said the sun would be rising any time now.
The raven soared out and up to circle the house, calling out like a siren. A couple of fat-bodied buzzards joined him and I rolled my eyes.
Turning to go inside, I rubbed a stinging spot on my arm. The raven’s claws must have scratched me when I shook him off my arm.
Then I looked down at my arms and, with a chill, lifted a pant-leg. My arms and legs were covered in fading red marks.
My hunger roared to life as the sky over the trees began to lighten, setting my skin to itching.
Something had attacked me in my sleep!
And I was hungry.

I toyed with the idea of leaving Ed at the cabin while I went to town, but the memory of my nightmare made me wait until he dragged his sorry ass out of bed.
“I’ll buy you breakfast,” I told his stumbling, rumpled back as I shoved him into the bathroom to shower. “We can sleep in tomorrow, but today I’ve got shit to do. And If you want to say here we need to get groceries.” Again. Since you cooked all my meat.
He sighed, but did what he was told without too much grumbling.
“You’re gonna want a case of beer anyway,” I reminded him. That got him moving.
Once I heard the shower start up, I gave in and slumped against the kitchen counter and pressed a hand to my throat. God damn it.
This was the real reason I needed to go town. I needed meat and blood and I wasn’t about to go hunt squirrels. I swallowed against the burning agony in my throat.
“Hurry up!” I yelled toward the bathroom.
I heard Ed curse and drop something, but I didn’t care. He was starting to look less like an alcoholic senior and more like my next blood donor-turned-ghoul with every passing second.
