Chapter Eighteen

“We’re going to need to take a car,” Remy said. “I can’t hunt with you if you’re running.” He patted his lucky stake. “And Dolly is ready to taste some blood.”

“Yeah,” I said, texting Rick as I hurried to my car. “We’ll start at the river and track the bastards to their nest. One way or the other, those assholes are going to tell me why they smell like the alpha.”

I paused at my car door when Rick returned my text.

I’m fine, Kait. Going home for a hot shower and a warm bed. Be careful.

Remy got into the passenger side and buckled up. “Let’s go,” he said. “I’m curious to see if the wolf is still alive.”

I glared at him as I drove down the street. “You—”

Before I could get more than that one word out, Sam rushed from the shadows and stood directly in the path of my car.

“What the fuck,” Remy said. “Another delay. Run him over.”

I stopped the car and for a few seconds, Sam and I stared at each other through the windshield. He wasn’t wearing his true face, but it no longer seemed to matter. I knew him, and it would be hard for him to hide from me now.

Who he was never left his eyes, no matter what face he wore.

He had to know I’d heard about his recent murder spree—and that I knew he’d lost control and killed an innocent.

Finally, I put down my window. “Get in,” I said.

“Who is he?” Remy asked, toying with the blade he’d pulled.

“Sam Keller,” I told him. “Shapeshifter. Serial killer.”

“Shapeshifter,” he said, his voice going flat. And when Sam got into the back seat, Remy, apparently not scared of anything, turned to face him. “You get in my head once, SK, and I will shove a bomb down your throat and make sure you never get another chance. You got that?”

Sam gave him a nod. “I don’t fight for fun, hunter. It weakens me, and right now, I do not want to be weak.”

I was surprised that he was sharing his vulnerabilities with a stranger. It didn’t surprise me that he knew who Remy was, though, or that he was in a dark place. Sam didn’t want to fuck up. He didn’t want to believe he was unable to control himself. That would make him feel like he was all urges and that his intelligence was lacking. Also, we’d had a deal, and he’d know I would be contemplating killing him.

“I’m sorry, Kait,” he said, after I’d been driving for a few minutes in silence. “I made a mistake.”

“A big fucking mistake,” I said.

“What’d he do?” Remy asked.

“He went nuts and killed an innocent,” I said. “We had an agreement, and he fucked it up.”

“What the hell?” Sam said, abruptly angry. “She wasn’t an innocent. It’s not for her I’m sorry, but for the problems it will bring you. The pressure from your detective to capture me.”

I narrowed my eyes and caught his stare through the rearview mirror.
