CJ sat alone in the conference room, staring at the two boards littered with notes. Her eyes scanned what evidence they had so far. “A whole lot of nothing,” she mumbled.

She scanned the list of names, and none of her possible suspects could be ruled out—the wife, the owner, or the visitor. In fact, she was beginning to think Ricardson was involved somehow. Could Ralston have crossed him or someone else? Where does Jennings fit? Was she the mystery woman in the room that night? The list is getting longer, not shorter.

It was nearing four o’clock. She wanted to call Ben and invite him to dinner, but … her insides quivered and her stomach churned. They already had plans for tomorrow night. Am I getting too deep, too fast?

She rubbed her face with both hands. It was time to get out of this room and go to her apartment. She piled some files into a banker’s box, stood, and walked to the window. A flock of seagulls floated over the Ashley River Memorial Bridge and the increasing Friday afternoon traffic. As she left, she eyed the one word on the board she hoped would solve her two cases. DNA.
