Matthew spent the rest of the day obsessively looking at Google Maps, wondering where Beatrice might be on the road back to Ashbrook. She might be as far as Washington, maybe even on her way to New York—who knew? He didn’t want to obsess over it, but he found he couldn’t help himself. Finally, he had some idea of where she was and where she was headed.

Work kept him distracted. Summer was his busiest season by far at White Mountain National Forest. There were kids’ activities to plan: nature hikes, puppet shows, crafts. Then there was the adult programming: courses in first aid, basic survival skills, camping for newbies, wildlife talks.

As the head ranger, Matthew didn’t have to lead any of these activities—he focused on the planning and making sure the other rangers did a good job of delivering the programs. One of his proudest accomplishments was the Little Ranger program, which helped kids learn about conservation and the plants and animals in the park. Matthew knew that the park’s future survival depended on kids learning about, respecting, and loving the park he was so proud of.

Despite his role as chief planner, he liked to be hands-on when he could. He was personally responsible that afternoon for leading a hike along the Sugar Maple trail. The trail looped past cutting sites, offering lots of opportunity to talk about timber management plus point out some of the plants and animals that could be found in the area. As Matthew strode ahead in his boots, leading the pack, he was grateful when his cell signal cut out, forcing him to keep his head in the game.

Once the hike was over, his cell started ringing again and again. It was the sheriff.

“I’ve got a lead!” the sheriff said excitedly. “The FBI gave me a list of names, animal rights activists who’ve been bothering Frank. But it’s not about that. I got a tip from a woman who called in a couple of hours ago. She says she’s been hearing what sounds like a big cat in her neighbor’s yard. Roaring noises, huffing, growling. Says it can’t be a normal housecat.”

“Who’s the neighbor?”

“No known connection to Frank or animal rights or anything. Maybe he’s an exotic animal dealer. Don’t know. But we’ve got to check it out immediately. You free?”

Matthew was flattered to be asked. “I just finished work. Count me in.”

He met the sheriff on Pike Road, a dirt side road in the middle of nowhere. The sheriff was parked on the side of the road some distance down from their target’s house. The two of them walked down the road together, not wanting to give anyone the heads up they were there. The sun was starting to go down. Summer was almost over and the days weren’t as long as they once were. There was absolutely no sign of autumn yet but it wasn’t that far away. September and the fall colors would be upon them soon enough.

Matthew felt his heart drop. Usually he and Beatrice had really memorable summers together.
