He would not answer her questions when he removed Lang’s shabby photo album from beneath the driver’s seat and made her wait in the car while he went to make a phone call.

“Baker?” said Charles Ward over the crackling line. “What can I do you for?”

“I need the toxicology report on a stiff. USC professor by the name of Arthur Xavier Scholz who may have come in over the past few days.”

“Uh, sure. Just give me a second. Does this have to do with the thing we discussed the other evening?” Charles sounded excited.

“Yes. Now less talking about that over the phone, and please go check if you don’t mind. Time’s running thin.”

Charles came back on the line with good news.

“You’re in luck, Baker. Body came in the morning after you were here. The deceased specifically requested an autopsy in their will. What do you want to know?”
