ALEX WAS BARELY ABLE to contain her excitement as the taxi navigated the route from airport to her apartment. She needed to see Geoffrey and fortify herself for the remaining six weeks in California. It had been more difficult than she had anticipated being away from everything she knew, but not for the reasons she originally believed.

She liked working out on the Poulsen estates, and enjoyed being able to make intelligent contributions to the running of the company. Sawyer had taken several of her suggestions to heart, and all the employees appeared to be warming up to her. Many of the staff stopped by the office during the day for her opinion, or invited her out to see different jobs around the estate they thought she might enjoy learning about. She loved the weather and the more casual atmosphere of the place. She had only worn high heels twice in her tenure at the vineyard, and had gotten comfortable wearing jeans to work. While she adored Denise who had always been gracious, willing to teach, and giving to her employees, Alex was growing to relish the long discussions, banter, and even the passionate disagreements she had with Sawyer almost every day.

The job in California was never boring and it allowed her a chance to use her creative skills without being stuck behind a desk. Every day she attempted to outline a strategy and then hung on for dear life as things changed, people dropped in, vendors didn’t deliver or a hundred other unplanned events occurred. Her firefighting skills in six weeks at the vineyards had been honed to a degree five years in her job at Poulsen Real Estate and Investments never could have prepared her for and she realized with a start that she might not ever be satisfied with her old role again.

But she missed having girlfriends like Tara to hang out with on the weekends. She missed the lovely, comfortable dates with Geoffrey and evenings at home just snuggled up in front of the television. Living with Sawyer in that big house was becoming a bit more confining than the 1,100 square foot apartment she and Geoffrey shared. But they had begun to work well together and made a good team. Sometimes she wished the job there would not end. That thought brought her upright.

The taxi stopped in front of her apartment building. Paying the driver, she waited on the curb as he got her bag from the trunk. She could feel the butterflies take flight in her stomach as she walked up the stairs and through the lobby to the elevator. She felt a moment’s hesitation thinking that maybe she should have called Geoffrey to let him know she was coming and then dismissed the thought as silly. After all, it was her apartment. It was Friday evening. He was bound to be home and would be pleasantly surprised to see her.

Making her way to the door, she inhaled and smoothed her hair. She probably should have checked herself in a mirror, she thought in passing, but stopped the errant thought.
