Several hours later
Anabelle and I finally made it upstairs to the bedroom after we chased our desires several times while she was bent over the desk. She was weary and weak when I carried her to my bed, but her body still reacted to my touch. I had a lot more stamina than I had in my youth, or perhaps it was the result of being a caged animal for so long that I didnât remember how to stop when my muscles begged to give out. Anabelle made me feel alive. My honey haired beauty was a breath of fresh air, a chance at redemption, and so much more. She helped me find life when I thought I was dead, and I was going to fight to keep that with every ounce of my being. She took my heart, and I wanted to give her everything I had left.
âThat was one hell of a way to spend the day.â Hannah smiled and stretched her arms as she sat up in bed.
âWas it better than working?â I leaned forward and kissed her forehead. âOr watching movies?â
âBetter than both by a landslide.â She laughed under her breath and then sank into my embrace.
âMaybe weâll have to do it again tomorrow.â I smiled. âThe day after tooâ¦â
âI definitely wonât complain.â Her head fell against my shoulder. âI love being here with you.â
âI love having you here.â I exhaled sharply.
We stayed tangled in an embrace for a little longer, but we were both famished, so we had to take a break and get something to eat. We squeezed in a movie on the couch before it was time for her to go, but I barely paid attention to the television screen. My eyes were on my beautyâthe girl that had saved me from my darkness. I did love having her there with me, and I didnât want her to go when the time finally came. I didnât want to sleep alone. I wanted her in my armsâin my bedâit was where she belonged. That time would come when the moment was right, but I didnât want to rush it until she was ready. I would be essentially asking her to join me in my prison and give up the outside world for one that belonged to the two of us.
It was easy for me to walk into that prison and slam the doorâit was necessary, and it allowed me to succumb to the beast that coped with loss by giving in to damnation. The woman I married understood the necessity of the prison and was willing to make that sacrifice, but we never made it thereâwe lingered in the outside world too long when the risks were too great, and we paid the price. We tried to have a normal life as long as possible before we accepted our solitude, and we lived with the fear of my past catching up with us, only to be blindsided by a speeding car on what should have been the happiest day of our lives.
