Chapter 13

Eli quickly rubbed the towel over his body to dry off after his fast shower. He wrapped the towel around his hips. A few stray water drops ran down his chest in an irritating trickle, but he didn't take the time to remove them.

He really wanted to get out of Oakdale, but he had to get the stench of that foster house off his skin. The kids needed to bathe, too. He could tell it had been a while since any of them had seen the inside of a shower. Or tub. Probably to hide the bruises under the dirt. Or just negligence. His lip curled in a snarl.

He took a deep breath and forced the anger down. He couldn't go back and kill that son of a bitch. He couldn't. Maybe if he told it to himself enough, he'd believe it. Not likely.

He double checked that the towel was firmly in place before he reached for the door. In his rush to get in the shower, he hadn't grabbed his clothes. Actually, he hadn't even thought about it. He wasn't used to having anyone here other than himself. Well, the towel would have to serve. He needed to get everybody bathed so they could get on the road. It would be better to take care of things like that now, while they had everything hooked up. Hopefully, they could get it all done before anyone came looking for them.

He stepped out of the bathroom and raised one eyebrow at the scrutiny he got. The three children and Ginny were all staring at him with different variations of surprise from their seats around the table. Playing cards were spread out in front of them.

He managed not to smile when he noticed Ginny's eyes grow wide as they wandered over his body, stopping at his chest tattoo, then moving to the one on his abs. A little frown furrowed her brow.

"What?" he frowned, turning his attention to the children to keep his body from responding to her inspection. "I didn't bring my clothes. Anyway, Keith, get in there."

Eli opened the cupboard and grabbed a couple of towels. He tossed one to the boy and set the others on the counter near the stove.

"Me?" Keith argued as he caught the towel. "Why me? Why am I next?"

Eli gave him a flat look. "Because I said so."

He'd learned long ago that between the look and that statement, he could get most kids to do what he wanted. The older ones, or the more dominant ones, were a little bit more difficult. Keith glared at him, and for a moment Eli thought the boy was going to argue again. Then he sighed and got up from the table.

"Your clothes?" Eli prompted.

The boy stood on the seat and reached to the compartment above the cab. There were three piles of clothes neatly laid out. The bags were shoved to the side. Keith pulled down the first pile of clothes and shot a challenging look at Eli.
